Quick refresher

How to get a summary

You can do this on the page you're already reading, with nothing to copy or paste.

  1. Open any article

A news story, a long blog post, a help page, a paper on arXiv. If the page has readable text, the extension can work with it.

  2. Click the icon

Or press Ctrl+Shift+E (⌘+Shift+E on a Mac). The extension pulls the readable text from the page, leaving out menus, ads and footers.

  3. Read the main points

A panel opens on the right with the summary. Copy it into your notes with one click, or close the panel and keep reading.

Set it up the way you read

Two choices in the settings shape every summary: how the extension talks to ChatGPT, and the prompt it uses.

  • ChatGPT login (default). Sign in to ChatGPT in your browser and the extension uses that session. When ChatGPT logs you out, the panel asks you to sign in again and refresh the page.
  • OpenAI API key. Paste a key from your OpenAI account in the settings. It's faster and skips the repeat logins, but it uses your API quota.
  • Your own prompt. By default you get the main points as a list. Change the prompt once and every summary follows it, for example “Summarise the following article in simple English”.

What happens to the page text

The extension reads the text of the page only when you ask for a summary and sends it straight to ChatGPT or the OpenAI API, depending on your settings. It doesn't keep the text or send it to our servers. The details are in the privacy policy.

Try it on the next long article

Press Ctrl+Shift+E on any page with readable text. New here? The extension is free to add.
