Music Identifier: name any song in Chrome, then ask AI about it

You can ask an AI chat almost anything about a song: what it's about, what to listen to next, how to play it. What you can't do is ask it "what's this song?" while a video plays in another tab, because a chat window can't hear your tab. Music Identifier, a free music identifier extension, fills that gap. It listens to the audio playing in the current tab and tells you the title and artist, and the conversation with your AI can start from there.

How to identify a song in your browser

  1. Install the free song identifier extension for Chrome.
  2. Play the video or stream with the song you want to know.
  3. Click the extension icon. It listens to the tab's audio, so there's no need to hold up a phone.
  4. Get the title and artist, with links to lyrics, the music video and your past results.

Then ask your AI chat

Once you have the exact title and artist, an AI chat becomes genuinely useful, because it's no longer guessing which song you mean. Prompts we like:

  • "Suggest ten songs with a similar mood and tempo to [title] by [artist], and say why each one fits."
  • "What's the story behind [title]? Keep it to what's well documented."
  • "Give me a simple chord progression to play along with [title] on guitar."
  • "Build a 45-minute running playlist around [title], starting slower and ending faster."

For facts the AI might get wrong, like tempo and key, measure them instead: song-identify.com has a free BPM detector and key detector that run on an audio file in your browser.

What you can do with the song next

  • Make a playlist cover that matches it, using the colors of its album art. There's a step-by-step guide to aesthetic playlist covers on song-identify.com.
  • Save the playlist you build around it as a PDF or image with a full page capture.

Common questions

Can ChatGPT identify a song?

Not from audio playing in your browser, because it can't hear your tab. If you remember lyrics, it can try to guess from those. For audio, use a song identifier first, then ask ChatGPT about the result.

How do I find the name of a song in a YouTube video?

Play the video and click Music Identifier. It identifies the music from the tab's audio and shows the title and artist. If you want the gist of the video itself, a YouTube video summary covers that.

What if the song isn't recognized?

Try a section where the music is clear and loud, without talking over it. Sped-up edits and remixes are the most common reason a clip doesn't match.

Name the song, then let the AI take it from there.
